After looking into the versatility of the Wave and Surge, we get to examine another Leatherman product, the Wingman.
Just like with our earlier review posts, we will look into the tools, construction, and functionality of the Wingman. With this Leatherman Wingman review, we’ll also try to see if our current multi tool is on par with the quality of the Wave and Surge. The Wingman seems to be your average multi tool if you’re looking for one. It’s more affordable compared to other tools from the Leatherman brand. Since it’s made by Leatherman, we can expect the Wingman to be well-made and functional.
Here’s our comprehensive Wingman Leatherman review as your guide.
Criteria for a great multi tool
Multi tools are handy tools that you can carry everywhere and anywhere you want. With the essential pocket tools, you can do repairs from basic to mid-range improvements. However, not all multi tools are worth considering. Some may not have the quality that you are looking for. Others may have the right quality but they might not be fit for your budget. In this case, we consider a great multi tool as something with a strong and durable build.
The right multi tool should have the basic tools to do the most common repair. The tools should also be functional and working as they should. Lastly, you should be able to use the tools for a time – longer would be better. Price would be a consideration. But if you’re sure of a tool’s quality, shelling out a little more wouldn’t be a problem for you.
Product Overview
Given that this is a Leatherman Wingman review, our multi tool for critique is the Wingman. At first glance, the Wingman is an average-sized tool. It’s a literal pocket tool with its short and compact size. Upon testing, the Wingman held up to our best performance standards. It’s functional with 14 tools. It’s also very durable with rust-proof and lightweight stainless steel.
One of the best features of the Wingman is that almost all of its tools can be opened externally. The integrated clip is handy if you wish to clip it on your belt instead of the sheath provided by Leatherman. All the tools did excellent when tested. The Wingman carries a sharp knife which is a hybrid of sorts. It carries both a straight and a serrated edge. The file easily and quickly removes material. The scissors are one of Leatherman’s largest with a sharp and precise cut.
The unique package opener is a good addition. The unassuming hook is surprisingly sharp which makes it easy to cut through tough plastic especially from blister packs. The contoured shape of the Wingman makes it ergonomic as well. It’s very comfortable on the hand despite its small shape. The locking mechanism of the tools is pretty impressive too. Tools are not wobbly so they feel firm when you work with them.As a Leatherman product, the Wingman is also under warranty for 25 years. You can always get your Wingman repaired if it ever needs fixing. So you definitely get the value of the price you pay for this multi tool.
Pros
There are a lot of good things to be said for the Leatherman Wingman. It’s completely made of stainless steel so it’s got great build quality. It also has the basic tools you’d need for primary repairs around the house; like loose screws. The compact and ergonomic feel of the Wingman is another awesome feature. The presence of a removable clip did a lot to cut back on the price of the Wingman making it one of the best affordable multi tools on the market. It’s a multi tool that is best for light to moderate repairs.
Cons
The Wingman’s compact size is also its drawback especially for those who have large hands. Another point of concern is the locking mechanism on the knife. Users reported accidental unlocking of the knife can sometimes happen which can cause injury. An incident was noted on one of the amazon Leatherman Wingman reviews.
Most users who performed their own Leatherman Wingman review reported that accidental unlocking of the knife sometimes happen which can cause injury. Something that you should be more careful of.
